Campbell Leads Men's Track and Field to Successful Day at Lafayette-Rider Invitational

NEW YORK, N.Y. (February 15, 2008) - In their last meet before next week's BIG EAST Championship, the University of Connecticut men's track and field team had a successful tune-up at the Lafayette-Rider Invitational Friday, held at the Armory in New York City. Indoor track and field captain Basil Campbell (Ewing N.J.) led the way with two wins in the non-scoring meet. He won the 60-meter high hurdles with a time of 8.05 seconds, and followed it up with a 200m dash win with a time of 21.64 seconds.
Other winners included Anthony Pomo (Saddle Brook, N.J.), who won the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.84 seconds, as well as Marquis Thomas (Mattapan, Mass.), who the high jump by clearing 6-8¼. The high jump proved to be especially successful for UConn as Daniel Hutcherson (New London, Conn.) and Tyrone Faverey (Allentown, Pa.) finished right behind Thomas, each clearing 6-6¾.
Other top performers for the Huskies included Verrol Jackson (Schenectady, N.Y.), who finished in second behind Campbell in the 60-meter high hurdles with a time of 8.09 seconds. Brian Gagnon (Lowell, Mass.) was second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:50.74. Will Sanders (Wethersfield, Conn.) was second in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:28.55, while Faverey finished his strong day with a second place showing in the triple jump, with a distance of 48-10¾.
The BIG EAST Championship is next weekend, February 23-24 at the Armory in New York City. Events will begin at 8:00 a.m. both days and will continue throughout the day.
