STORRS, Conn. (Sept. 16, 2008) – The University of Connecticut held its weekly football media luncheon on Tuesday for Friday's game against Baylor. Here are selected quotes from the event.
Senior cornerback Darius Butler
Coming out of High School what position did you want to play?
“Whichever one helped the team most. My high school coach always pushed me and told me I would be a better receiver at the next level than a corner. When I came here I got put at corner because I got downfield the quickest that way.”
How does the fact that Baylor has scored 96 points in their past two games influence your outlook on this Friday’s matchup?
“It’s impressive and it means we have to work our hardest. Especially coming off a short week, it means we have to prepare every day and every minute that much more. 96 points in two weeks is good no matter who you’re playing. They’re a good group of guys and a great group of athletes, so we’re going to have to bring our A-game.”
On Donald Brown:
“He’s a workhorse and he’s been carrying this team. He had a great game vs. Temple and a great game vs. Virginia. We know as a defense when he gets the ball in his hands that we’re going to be off the field a little bit longer. He’s been carrying the load pretty much for the past couple weeks, but now we have (Jordan) Todman and we should have Dre (Andre Dixon) back soon, and all three of them are pretty good.”
How do you manage to keep up with what’s going on while switching sides of the ball?
“It’s kind of easy now after practicing for a while. After the defensive meeting (at practice) I go and meet with the wide outs, and I do the same thing the day of the game. During the game when I come off the field on defense I go and stand behind Coach (Todd) Orlando (defensive coordinator) and vice versa. It’s pretty easy to switch.”
On the support of the home crowd:
“Everybody wants to protect their house, and we’ve got a good streak so far at nine in a row. It’s just a different feeling when you’ve got the students behind you and the state of Connecticut behind you making noise. We know how it is going into somebody else’s house and it’s like that. I like going into other atmospheres with the whole crowd screaming against us, but it’s a little more comfortable at home and we take pride in playing here.”
