STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut men's ice hockey team fell 3-1 to Air Force in their final game of the weekend series Saturday at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum.
The Huskies drop to 2-8-2 on the season, 2-5-2 in Atlantic Hockey play while Air Force improves their record to 6-5-3 on the year and 6-1-3 AHA.
Air Force was the first team to get on the board in the second period striking twice in the first five minutes of the second period. The Falcons notched their first goal of the game at 2:28 in the second as Paul Weisgarber hit the back of the net with some help from Jacques Lamoureux. Just two minutes later, at 4:36, Air Force got on the board yet again this time Blake Page scored for the Falcons with some assistance from Derrick Burnett.
The Falcons recorded their third unanswered goal of the period at 9:14. This goal came on a power play five on four advantage and Lamoureux tallied his seventh goal of the season as Burnett and Jeff Hajner assisted.
The three-goal advantage was all the Falcons would need to hang on, but the Huskies made it interesting at the end of the third period when they pulled their goalie with 2:02 remaining in the game. With the extra-man advantage, UConn squelched a shutout bid by Air Force as freshman Alex Gerke (Tomah, Wisc.) recorded his third goal of the season. Gerke was aided by juniors Jason Krispel (Cypress, Calif.) and Matt Miller (Bayonne, N.J.) to cut the Falcons lead to 2 with 43 seconds left in the game.
Freshman Jeff Larson had another tough day in goal making 35 more saves for a weekend total of 84, letting just the three goals up. On the other side of things, Air Force goalie Andrew Volkening allowed just one goal making 21 saves on the night.
The Huskies are back in action on Tuesday November 24 at Holy Cross when they take on the Crusaders in Worcester, Mass. in their ninth road game of the season. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m.
