Huskies Dominate the College of Saint Rose 85-44

STORRS, Conn. - Senior Tina Charles (Jamaica, N.Y.) recorded a double-double as she scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the No. 1/1 University of Connecticut women's basketball team over the College of Saint Rose 85-44 in exhibition action on Thursday night in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.
Joining Charles in double-figures was junior Maya Moore (Lawrenceville, Ga.), who tallied a game-high 19 points to go along with seven boards while sophomore Caroline Doty (Doylestown, Pa.) and freshman Kelly Faris (Plainfield, Ind.) tallied 11 and 14 points, respectively.
The Huskies ran out to an 10-3 run in the first 4:24 to begin tonight's contest, led by four points from both Charles and Moore, before the College of Saint Rose pulled within four at 14-10 with an Ola Shajuyiabe three-point field goal.
UConn pulled away to make the score 42-17 at the 4:15 mark in the first frame with a 20-4 run in a span of 7:14. Moore led the charge with eight of her 17 first-half points.
Moore led all scorers at the break with her 17 points, shooting eight-of-11 with four assists and five offensive rebounds in the first half. Charles' double-double came prior to intermission as she picked up 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Huskies shot .556 (25-for-45) from the floor and limited the Golden Knights to just nine field goals in the first 20 minutes of play.
Both Doty and Faris scored seven points in the second half as the Huskies extended their lead to as much as 46 with 2:32 left on the clock in tonight's contest. Doty also pulled down four rebounds as the Huskies dominated on both ends of the court throughout the game, finishing the night with 24 offensive and 23 defensive boards on the night.
The Golden Knights scored just 16 points in the paint in tonight's exhibition, while shooting 5-for-23 from behind the arc. The Huskies shot .468 (36-of-77) from the field and hit seven three-pointers for 21 of their 85 points. With the win, the Huskies improve to 21-2 in preseason games dating back to the 1997 season, while recording their 12th victory in their last 13 exhibition match-ups.
UConn will return to action on Monday, Nov. 9 when it plays host to Vanguard at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. in a 7:00 p.m. tip.
