UConn Volleyball Downs Rutgers in Five Sets

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - In BIG EAST volleyball action on Saturday afternoon, the University of Connecticut volleyball team recorded its sixth conference win with a 3-2 victory of Rutgers in the College Avenue Gym. The Huskies improve to 13-14 overall this season. Junior Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) and sophomore Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) were two of the three UConn players to lead the team with double-figures.
For the 13th time this season, Murray recorded double-digit kills with 15 for the Huskies, while Kirk led the team with 16. Senior Chauntay Mickens (Germantown, Md.) was the final player to record double-figures with 11 kills. Freshman Mattison Quayle (Los Angeles, Calif.) pitched in eight and sophomore Samantha Arriaran (Norco, Calif.) tallied six.
Arriaran dished out 43 assists on the afternoon and had three digs and two service aces. Senior Jessica Isaac (Erlanger, Ky.) led all Huskies with 22 digs, while adding three assists. Freshman defensive specialist Kelsey Maving (Tonawanda, N.Y.) narrowly missed double-figures in digs with nine.
Play was close in all five sets between the Huskies and the Scarlet Knights as UConn edged Rutgers 25-22 in the first set before the Scarlet Knights took set number two 25-18. Rutgers took the third set 25-20 but the Huskies answered back in the fourth with a dominating 25-11 victory.
In the final set of the afternoon, UConn battled the Scarlet Knights to a 19-17 final to take the conference victory. The Huskies also recorded 26 kills in the final two sets to come away with the win.
With the loss, Rutgers falls to 9-17 on the year and 2-9 in the BIG EAST.
The Huskies continue the conference slate with another match in New Jersey, taking on the Seton Hall Pirates at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8.
Game Notes
• UConn has never gone to five-sets against Rutgers in the all-time series, but continues its current winning streak against the Scarlet Knights. The Huskies have won the last eight meetings.
• The Huskies are now 6-5 in five-set decisions this season, including a 3-0 five-set record in BIG EAST play.
• Both Chauntay Mickens and Rebecca Murray have both recorded double-figures in three of the last four matches this season.
