PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The University of Connecticut women's track and field team won six events at Brown's Alden Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 5 to open the 2009-10 season. Leading the way were seniors Phylicia George and Chanell Smith along with freshman Brigitte Mania.
George, a senior captain, just missed qualifying for the National Championship in her first meet of the year, with a first place finish in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.87.
Smith came through in the 300-meter dash with a respectable time of 40.74 to earn the victory in the event. Mania also performed well with a first-place finish in the 1,000-meter run to begin her UConn track and field career.
"Whenever we look at this first meet, the way we analyze it, is to see what each and every individual is going to take from their own assessment," said head coach Bill Morgan. "We continue to look for each athlete to inspire themselves to great performances and now they have a starting point, an initial point, to make some judgments from that. Individually, that brings us collectively together as a team for much success down the road."
Newcomer Kewanna Donaldson began her career at UConn with a victory in the 55-meter dash to add to the Huskies' success with a winning time of 7.27. Freshman Brittany Power also won the long jump with at jump of 5.05 meters.
UConn relay success continued where it left off from last season, as the Huskies' 4x400 relay team won its event with a time of 3:59.95.
