PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Connecticut junior offensive guard Zach Hurd (Waterford, Conn.), senior defensive lineman Lindsey Witten (Cleveland, Ohio) and junior linebacker Lawrence Wilson (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) were all named BIG EAST Conference First Team on Wednesday as the league announced its 2009 football awards.
Four other Huskies made Second Team honors - senior running back Andre Dixon (New Brunswick, N.J.), sophomore running back Jordan Todman (North Dartmouth, Mass.), junior linebacker Greg Lloyd (Clermont, Fla.) and senior cornerback Robert McClain (Lusby, Md.).
Junior cornerback Jasper Howard (Miami, Fla.), who passed away on October 18, was named the Honorary Captain of the All-BIG EAST teams.
"We regard the BIG EAST Conference as the biggest family in collegiate athletics," said BIG EAST Commissioner John Marinatto. "As a family, we wanted to respectfully remember Jasper Howard and honor his memory. In naming him the Honorary Captain of the 2009 All-BIG EAST Team, we have memorialized his name in BIG EAST Conference history."
Hurd started all 12 games for the Huskies at right guard and helped the team fashion a balanced attack in both the rushing and passing games.
Witten started all 12 games at the defensive end spot and made 41 tackles on the season with 11.5 sacks for a loss of 75 yards. He led the BIG EAST Conference in sacks and is seventh in the nation entering bowl season.
Wilson leads the Huskies in tackles with 130 stops, including ten for a loss, and started all 12 games for the Huskies at linebacker. He led the league in tackles at 11.23 per game and is fourth in the country in that category.
Todman gained 1,152 yards of rushing during the regular season and was the third-leading rusher in the conference and is ranked 41st nationally. His 1,152 yards currently ranks sixth in school history.
Dixon, who also earned Second Team All-BIG EAST honors in 2007, gained 967 yards on the ground during the regular season and scored 13 touchdowns.
Lloyd was the second-leading tackler on the Husky team with 91 stops and three tackles for a loss. He was tied as the fourth-leading tackler in the BIG EAST.
