STORRS, CONN. - University of Connecticut junior men's basketball player Jerome Dyson will be out indefinitely with a torn lateral meniscus of his right knee, it was announced Thursday.
He underwent an MRI Thursday afternoon at Windham Hospital in Willimantic and results showed the tear. He will undergo surgery within the next week. Dyson's status for the remainder of the season will be determined upon the results of that procedure.
Dyson was injured at the 15:44 mark of the first half of Wednesday's contest against Syracuse and did not return to action.
"We are obviously all very disappointed for Jerome, who has been such a big part of why we are 23-1 and in first place in the BIG EAST," said head coach Jim Calhoun. "As for our team going forward this season, it is another challenge we will have to face. We have very good players who I know will rise to the occasion and fill the void left by Jerome's absence."
Dyson started all 24 games to date in 2008-09 and averaged 13.2 points per contest. He has reached double figures in 18 games and led the Huskies in scoring five times.
