POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (March 10, 2009) - The University of Connecticut lacrosse team led Marist by a goal twice and never trailed by more than four goals in its 12-11 loss on Tuesday. Senior Whitney Michele (East Rochester, N.Y.) led the Huskies in goal scoring while classmate Katy Ryan (Hamburg, N.Y.) was among three UConn players to score twice.
It was Michele’s second hat trick of the 2009 season and her fourth-consecutive game with two or more goals scored.
For the second-straight game freshman Kiersten Tupper (Camillius, N.Y.) led the team with four points. Tupper, among the two-goal scorers for the Huskies, also had a pair of assists. In addition to Ryan and Tupper, freshman M.E. Lapham (Cazenovia, N.Y.) scored twice for UConn.
Shots were even (25-25) for the game with UConn (0-6) outshooting the Red Foxes (4-1) in the first period 15-13. Ryan had a team-best four ground balls as each team finished the game with 16.
UConn trailed by three goals (8-5) to start the second stanza and Marist scored to increase the lead to 9-5. The Huskies rallied with a five-goal run spurred on by Michele’s third of the game at 27:52. Senior Ashley Mitchelides (Hudson, Ohio) and Tupper both scored on free-position shots to get within a single goal (9-8). Lapham tied it less than 10 minutes into the second half and sophomore Jillian Cerar (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) gave UConn a 10-9 lead at 13:54.
The Red Foxes responded with a pair of goals to regain the lead at 12:29. Ryan scored for the Huskies on a free-position shot to tie it, 11-11, with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
At 3:44, Cristin Begley broke the tie, capitalizing on a free-position shot for the Red Foxes and securing the slim 12-11 victory.
In the cage, Jenna Moulton (East Rochester, N.Y.) and Anna Wallingford (Littleton, Colo.) once again split time in the cage. Moulton started the game and Wallingford played the final 38 minutes, making seven saves.
