STAMFORD, Conn. - The University of Connecticut community will come together on Wednesday, June 10 for a first-ever Fairfield County Day celebration on the UConn Stamford Campus from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Several parts of the University will join forces for a special event to help raise the profile of UConn in Southwestern Connecticut and financially benefit the scholarship funds for the Stamford campus and the UConn Alumni Association Fairfield County chapter. UConn head football coach Randy Edsall will be the special guest at the event.
UConn will be center stage as prominent alumni, academic and administrative leaders, university contributors and civic dignitaries unite to recognize the athletic excellence and storied sports tradition generated by outstanding Fairfield County natives who rose to stardom at Storrs.
The Fairfield County Sports Commission's third annual UConn Hall of Fame inductions will be the highlight of the evening, which includes a reception, induction ceremonies and a question and answer discussion with current UConn coaches and many former athletes.
The newest Hall of Famers are: *Rashamel Jones, the captain of the 1999 men's basketball national championship team; *Tom Penders, the only player to ever captain both the basketball and baseball teams. The Stratford native is now the head basketball coach at the University of Houston and has over 600 career collegiate victories; *Former women's basketball standout Rita Williams (Norwalk); *Trumbull's Joe Markus, one of the most versatile offensive players in football team history.
Other UConn sports figures attending include head baseball coach Jim Penders, and former UConn football players Nick Giaquinto, who is the only UConn player to win a Super Bowl ring while with the Washington Redskins, and Brian Usher, who played and coached football and still works at the University as the Associate Director of Admissions. Both Giaquinto (2008) and Usher (2007) are members of the Fairfield County UConn Hall of Fame. A host of other Husky standouts are expected to be part of the event. In addition, former women's basketball standout Maria Conlon will attend.
