STORRS, Conn. - Connecticut's George Springer was named to the 2009 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Northeast Region First Team as announced on Sunday.
The New Britain, Conn. native joins 12 other players on the First Team, including BIG EAST opponent Tim Morris from St. John's. Canisius, Army, Boston College and Manhattan each had two players on the top-team in the Northeast to occupy more than half of the squad.
Springer, who was named UConn's first ever BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, completed a successful freshman season with the Huskies, leading the team in runs scored (75), home runs (16) and RBI (57), while being third in hits with 76.
As a freshman, Springer became one of the Huskies' most successful freshmen in program history as he climbed atop the UConn single-season record book with 16 home runs, the most in a single-season by a freshman. He also earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team, becoming the first UConn player to do so since the 2006 season.
Springer currently holds the school record with the most runs scored in a single-season by any player with 75, while his 16 homers puts him into a three-way tie in third place on the UConn single-season home runs list. He was also named BIG EAST Player of the Week on May 3, marking the first weekly honor for the UConn ballclub in the last two years. With 76 hits in 212 at-bats, Springer batted .358 for the Huskies in 56 games played. He added 75 runs and 57 RBI to his tally as he stole 12 bases on the year. He recorded 14 doubles and three triples and walked 32 times, while helping the Huskies to their fourth 30+ win season in the last five years, finishing the regular season 36-24 overall.
Along with his BIG EAST honors, Springer was named a Pro-Line Athletic/NCBWA Freshman All-American and a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American.
