Men's Soccer Announces 2009 Schedule

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut men's soccer team looks forward to another promising season in 2009 after advancing to the NCAA Final 16 last fall. The Huskies' 17-match schedule in 2009 features six opponents that participated in the 2008 NCAA Tournament along with nine home games at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.
The Huskies' open the regular season against non-conference opponents on Sept. 2 and Sept.5 against St. Peter's and Boston University before heading up to Hanover, N.H. for the Dartmouth Invitational. UConn will face host, Dartmouth in a Friday, Sept. 11 match before taking on Iona at noon on the following Sunday.
UConn opens up BIG EAST play on the road at Villanova on Friday, Sept. 18 then will head to Piscataway, N.J. to take on Rutgers on Sept. 20.
UConn's BIG EAST home schedule is packed with exciting games, including contests against St. John's, Syracuse, Georgetown, Providence, Pittsburgh and Marquette. The Huskies will open BIG EAST play at home on Sept. 25 against St. John's, a team which battled their way into the NCAA Tournament Final Four in 2008. Two days following the Red Storm match-up, the Huskies will host Syracuse on Sept. 27.
The Huskies' four-game home stand in October will feature a Saturday, Oct. 3 contest with the Georgetown Hoyas at 7:00 p.m. and a Tuesday, Oct. 6 mid-week battle against Providence at 7:00 p.m.
The West Virginia Mountaineers will host the Huskies in 2009, with a Friday, Oct. 9th contest in Morgantown, W. Va. before UConn returns to Storrs, Conn. on Oct. 14, as the Huskies are slated to take on Ivy League power and NCAA tournament team Harvard in their final home non-conference match-up of the year.
Before traveling to in-state rival, Yale on Oct. 20, the Huskies will take on Pittsburgh at Morrone Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 17. Last season, UConn batted both Yale and Pittsburgh to double-overtime ties as the Panthers and Huskies were knotted at two after 110 minutes, while the Yale contest remained scoreless.
The Huskies will spend three of their last four games on the road, including trips to Seton Hall on Oct. 24 and Notre Dame on Oct. 31. UConn's final home game during the regular season will be on Wednesday, Oct. 28 against Marquette, a team which the Huskies defeated 1-0 in Milwaukee, Wisc. During the 2008 season.
UConn's match at Notre Dame on Halloween will be the Huskies' regular-season finale with the game beginning at 2:00 p.m. in South Bend, Ind.
The 2009 BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship will feature the top-12 of the league's 16 teams as the top-six teams in each division with qualify for the postseason tournament. First round games will be held on Nov. 4 with quarterfinals following on Nov. 7, both games taking place at the higher-seeded team's institution. West Virginia will host the semifinals on Nov. 13 and the championship game on Nov. 15 in Morgantown, W. Va.
