STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut newcomer, Jossimar Sanchez, has earned All-American honors by Parade Magazine, announced last week with the rest of the High School All-Americans in Parade Magazine.
The Paterson, N.J. native played on two national championship teams before captaining St. Benedict's to a 20-1 mark in 2008, while he is also a member of the U.S. Under-18 National Team.
Sanchez, who played for the St. Benedict's Preparatory Grey Bees for the past four years, will begin attending UConn this fall.
"Jossimar will add to the long standing tradition of outstanding St. Benedict's players that have come to UConn," said head coach Ray Reid. "He will be a game changer for the our program."
Sanchez is the 10th St. Benedict's player to play for the UConn men's soccer program as he joins current Huskies, Mike Pezza and Marco Zanfardino on the 2009 roster.
Other Gray Bees that played at UConn include two-time BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and NSCAA First Team All-American, Maurizio Rocha, 2005 BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year, Mpho Moloi, and 2000 BIG EAST Rookie of the Cesar Cuellar. Roberto Vargas, a two-time All-BIG EAST Second Team selection, and Cuellar were both members of UConn's 2000 National Championship team.
Felipe Torres played for the Huskies from 1995-99 and was led by both former head coach Joe Morrone and current head coach Ray Reid, while Luis Arauz, who played in 1998-99, was selected for the All-BIG EAST First Team during his second season with the Huskies.
Matt Chavlovich, another St. Benedict's alum, currently holds the UConn record with 53 career wins in net as he is also the UConn leader in lowest goals allowed average (0.34) in a career and fewest goals allowed in a single season with three in 1998.
