24 Baseball Players Set For Summer League Action

STORRS, Conn. - Student-athletes from the University of Connecticut baseball team will jump right back into action this summer after their 36-24 season in 2009 to compete in multiple NCAA sanctioned summer leagues around the country.
The Huskies have 21 players competing in seven NCAA sanctioned leagues this summer, including 11 in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) and eight in the Cape Cod League. The Wareham Gateman boasts the most Huskies on their summer roster, with four current players, including 2009 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year George Springer.
Springer, who led the Huskies with 16 home runs, 57 RBI and 75 runs scored, joins pitchers Matt Barnes, Dave Fischer and Dusty Odenbach on the Gatemen roster. The Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod League will feature Pierre LePage and Dan Mahoney, as LePage finished the 2009 season for the Huskies with a 10-game hitting streak as he batted .340 with a team-high 80 hits.
Teammates Mike Olt and Elliot Glynn will play for the Orleans Firebirds out of Orleans, Mass. Glynn finished the 2009 season with a 5-4 record and a 4.76 ERA for the UConn ballclub, while Olt, who missed about 20 games due to an injury, ended the year with 40 RBI and 44 hits, including eight home runs.
The Holyoke Blue Sox out of the NECBL will utilize three Huskies this summer, led by Peter Fatse, who climbed into the top-20 of all-time Huskies in five career categories during his junior season. In 2009 for the Huskies, Fatse finished the year with 54 RBI, 73 hits and 11 home runs. Both Mike Nemeth and Doug Jennings will join Fatse with the Blue Sox as Nemeth also had a solid 2009 season with 80 hits and 38 RBI for UConn.
Kevin Vance will play for the Vermont Mountaineers of the NECBL along, while Mike Zaccardo will be on the North Shore Navigators roster. Around the NECBL, Greg Nappo and Scott Oberg will play for the Lowell All-Americans, Ted Hurvul will play for the Danbury Westerners and Doug Elliot will play for the Sanford Mainers. The Pittsfield American Defenders will also have a Husky on their roster in UConn utility player, John Andreoli, while catcher Joe Pavone will play for the North Adams Steeple Cats.
Pitcher Trent DeLazzer will play in the Prospect League for the Butler Blue Sox out of Butler, Pa. Nick Ahmed will compete this summer for the Westhampton Aviators in Westhampton, N.Y. as part of the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League, while John Sulzicki will play for the Ocean Giants of the Atlantic Baseball Confederation.
The Outer Banks Daredevils will have Harold Brantley Jr play for them this summer as part of the Coastal Plains League out of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. Bob Van Woert will play in the Valley League for the Haymarket Senators, who play their home games in Haymarket, Va.
The Huskies finished the 2009 season with 36 wins, the most by the ballclub since 2006 after battling their way into the BIG EAST Baseball Championship game for the sixth time in program history. It was also the fourth time in the last five seasons in which the Huskies have recorded 30+ victories.
