STORRS, Conn. - Head Coach Randy Edsall and his 2009 Husky squad hosted their annual 2009 Media and Photo Day on Monday. The event kicked off with a press conference where Edsall and the 2009 captains spoke to the media.
After a few days of practice in the heat the 2009 Huskies headed indoors to answer some questions and talk about the upcoming season.
Edsall on how the season seems to be going so far.
"We've got eight practices in so far, and they've gone well. We had a 145-play scrimmage (Sunday) in the heat of the afternoon, and the guys did a good job of battling through it. We were in pretty good condition, I thought. It was good to see some consistency. The first team got in about 55 or 60 plays, the 2's got a little less and the third team got about half of that. For the most part, I was pleased with the conditioning part of it. But we still have a long way to go and a lot of work to do."
Senior Captain Desi Cullen on working to avoid punt blocks.
"It's mostly just making sure we're executing the game plan. I worked with the long snappers all summer to get our timing down, making sure I was exact in just taking a two-step approach. Everything has been working well so far. I think we'll be fine during the season."
Senior Captain Robert McClain on what he learned from Darius Butler.
"I learned that I have to play at a fast level. He did everything fast. You can't take a play off or you're going to get beat. That's the biggest thing I got from Darius."
Junior Captain Anthony Sherman on his role in the new offense.
"It really hasn't changed too much. I'm doing pretty much the same things in the running game. I play a little more tailback in pass protection, but that's really the only thing that's different."
Junior Captain Scott Lutrus on his first impressions of UConn football.
"Coming out of high school and seeing all the kids coming in, I was like, I don't know how I'm going to make it here. I saw all their weight lifting numbers on the Internet, which, when I got here, weren't even true. I had no idea. I thought I was a little kid coming in here.
I didn't expect to play as soon as I did. I figured I'd come in and redshirt and try to get on some special teams the first couple of years. Maybe play junior or senior year. I really didn't expect this at all. It's worked out well."
