STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's basketball team will open the season as the nation's No. 1 team for the eighth time in the program's history, as announced by the Associated Press in its 2010-11 Preseason Poll, which was released Friday.
The Huskies received 39 of a possible 40 first-place votes, marking the first time in 35 weeks that Connecticut has not been the unanimous No. 1 pick. The other years in which UConn opened the season as the AP’s No. 1 team were 1995-96, 1999-00, 2000-01, 2001-02, 2003-04, 2008-09 and 2009-10.
Baylor, which received the other first place vote, is ranked second while Stanford, Tennessee and Xavier round out the top-five.
UConn has gone on to capture the NCAA National Championship in four of the previous seven seasons in which it opened the season ranked No. 1, most recently in 2009 and 2010. The Huskies have gone on to qualify for the NCAA Final Four in each of the previous seven seasons they have begun as the nation's top-ranked squad.
This year marks the 14th time UConn has been included in the top-five of the Preseason Poll.
The Huskies posted a perfect 39-0 mark in 2009-10 en route to the program's seventh NCAA National Title. UConn enters the 2010-11 campaign on a record 78-game winning streak.
UConn has been ranked No. 1 for a total of 144 weeks in the program's history, the most of any team nationally.
Connecticut is one of only three teams to be ranked in each of the last 11 Preseason Polls.
