UConn Falls At Notre Dame, 3-1

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (October 31, 2010) - Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) had a season-high 19 kills and Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) posted a double-double with 13 kills and 19 digs as the University of Connecticut volleyball team fell at Notre Dame, 3-1 this afternoon in BIG EAST play.
Set scores were 21-25, 25-23, 16-25, 25-27.
Despite a 1-0 advantage at the beginning of set one from a Cayla Broadwater (Williamsport, Md.) kill, the Huskies trailed during the rest of the first set. UConn rallied to post six unanswered points to tie the score at 20-20, but they would fall short after Notre Dame capitalized on a pair of UConn errors for the 25-21 win.
UConn bounced back to take set two from the Irish, 25-23. After a back and forth frame, the Huskies finally took control with an Angela Roidt (McFarland, Wis.) service ace followed by a Murray kill to put the score at 18-16. Connecticut forced four Notre Dame errors during the final six points, while Murray and Allison Nickel (Pittsford, N.Y.) each tallied a kill and Kelsey Maving (Tonawanda, N.Y.) had her first ace of the match to give the Huskies the victory.
After dropping the third set, the Huskies battled during set four, forcing Notre Dame to 27 points for the win. UConn had its first lead of the set at 12-11 with Morgan Freeman (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Kirk blocking the Irish offense. The Huskies held tough throughout the rest of the set, and Kirk silenced the Irish's first match point when she posted her season-high 19th kill. Notre Dame came back with three straight points, including two on UConn errors to take the final set for the 3-1 match victory.
Broadwater, Freeman and Nickel each ended the match with five kills, while Mattison Quayle (Los Angeles, Calif.) had a team-high three service aces.
Nickel also had a team-high six blocks with Freeman and Broadwater each posting five block assists.
The Huskies will return to Gampel Pavilion for the final time this season when they host Georgetown on Friday (Nov. 5) at 7:00 p.m. and USF on Sunday (Nov. 7) at 2:00 p.m.
