UConn Head Coach Randy Edsall
Opening statement:
"We got banged up out there today but the guys were able to go out there and do what they were expected to do. Sometimes people think winning is easy, but it's really hard. If you go back in UConn history there has only been a couple times when there's been four consecutive winning seasons. I'm very pleased for the kids, especially because it wasn't easy today against a tough Cincinnati team. We were able to do a little better than the 700 yards and 47 points they got on us last year, I think the kids got tired of me saying that all week."
On the sold out crowd at Rentschler Field:
"I want to thank the fans for being out there and showing the support they did today. It really makes a difference as you can see from us being undefeated at home. If we continue to sell out it can help us create something special."
On the possibility to win the BIG EAST spot in the Fiesta Bowl with a win next week:
"We're going to focus on the South Florida game because that's our biggest goal right now. The kids are going to come in here, but don't bother asking about the BCS because I told them to keep their mouths shut. South Florida is going to be a hard game. They beat Miami today so we know it will be hard, but you play the game to be in this position."
On the way the team has turned things around in the second half of the season:
"There were four things I told them after the Louisville game. I wanted to see them be more physically tough than we had been. I wanted them to be more mentally tough than we had been. I told them to let things go and focus on the next play. The last was I told them to let it fly and have fun. Whatever happens, happens. I told them today again, we needed to see effort and focus. Focus equals execution, and if we execute, we win." UConn Players
Jordan Todman
On trick play at the end of the half:
"It was definitely a trick play. It was supposed to be a pass, was a little broken and I had to take what I had to get into the end zone."
On the last four games and a possible BCS birth:
"You know it's a whole new team. Everybody has kind of switched attitudes and work ethic, and we've really started to practice, and we love to win and winning is addicting and makes everybody happy. So we'll stick to what works so far and we have one more game on the way."
Robbie Frey
On Cincy making a comeback until Frey's kick return:
"I was thinking we're going to get the offense in good field position, and our kick return went out and did exactly what they were supposed to do. It was great blocking and that's why I sprung free."
On Todman going down with an injury:
"Anybody that goes down in a game, you feel bad. Especially JT, he is one of our top players on our team. Anybody that goes down we try to put the next person in that will play well. I prepared for this week in case that happens and to help JT out, and I got to go in and played well at running back, and help the team out."
Cincinnati Head Coach Butch Jones
Opening Statement:
"First of all, I am very proud of our kids. I thought they fought and played exceptionally hard, but I think it is a great illustration of being able to make critical plays in critical stages in the game and that is what you saw today. UConn was able to make those plays today. On third down, we have to be able to get off the football field and that is what I stressed coming into the game today. When you look at the big play before the end of the half, there was an opportunity to go into the half 17 to 17, and then there was a big 14 point swing, but our kids kept battling to make it to 24-17.The following kickoff, our guys got out of their lanes and we allowed them to flip the field position game and those are all critical plays and critical elements in the game that we did not make today."
On attitude at halftime:
"Our guys at halftime were not down on themselves. I really liked our focus on the trip, we talked about a business trip and we believe we were going to win this football game. The kids were resilient in that regard. All you had to do was look at our sideline and watch how our kids played today. There was no quit, and there is a lot of coaches, players, and support staff who are hurt by the loss and rightfully so; it's inexcusable, but there are also some teaching lessons that come from the loss. It all comes back to the critical plays at critical stages in the game."
Cincinnati Players
Drew Frey
On the loss and not being bowl eligible:
"There was a lot of emphasis on this game and it's really disappointing for the team. We've got a group of guys giving it their all and we came up short."
On making key stops:
"It strains on your mind but I think as a defensive player and as our unit I think we look forward to those opportunities, we have to look forward to those opportunities. Our offense relies on us to force field goals when that stuff happens."
On Jordan Todman:
"He's a downhill hard runner, they've got some big old linemen and sometimes when they run the outside zone, he gets mixed up in our vision."
Zach Collaros
On not going to a bowl this year:
"The thing that hurts me the most, and upsets me the most is the seniors, not to have been at a bowl game every year they've been here. Some of those guys are my best friends and I've seen how disappointed and how sad they are."
