Huskies To Face West Virginia In BIG EAST Conference Semifinals

The No. 4 women's soccer team will face No. 2 West Virginia in the BIG EAST Semifinals on Friday, November 5 at 5 p.m. at Yurcak Field on the campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J. The semifinals and finals will be televised through CBS College Sports. The winner will advance to face the winner of No. 1 Marquette against No. 3 USF at 12 p.m. on Sunday, November 7. The final will also be aired on SNY and streamed live over the internet at www.bigeast.tv.
UConn (10-8-3) advanced to the BIG EAST Semifinals after defeating No. 5 Louisville, 3-0, in Storrs on October 28. The Huskies turned around and blanked No. 1 Notre Dame, 2-0, on Sunday, October 31 in South Bend, Ind. The victory over Notre Dame snapped the Irish's NCAA Division I record 77-game unbeaten streak against BIG EAST Conference opponents. The Huskies also became the first BIG EAST team to win at Notre Dame in 100 games. UConn was the last conference opponent to win in South Bend in 1995, defeating Notre Dame, 5-4, in overtime.
Against Notre Dame, senior Elise Fugowski (Stockholm, N.J.) scored both goals with assists to senior Erin Clark (Somers, Conn.) and sophomore Linda Ruutu (Espoo, Finland). Fugowski was named a Collegesoccer360.com Primetime Performer of the Week for her two-goal effort. Fugowski also registered a goal against Lousiville in the BIG EAST First Round. Junior goalkeeper Jessica Dulski (Pittsford, N.Y.) made three saves in each game to record her fourth and fifth shutouts of the season.
The Huskies own an 11-3-3 record all-time against West Virginia. In the last four games, UConn stands at 0-1-3 against the Mountaineers. In the last meeting on October 22, 2010, West Virginia defeated UConn, 3-0, in Morgantown, W. VA.
West Virginia advanced to the BIG EAST Semifinals with a bye in the first round and a 1-0 victory over Rutgers in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals.
The Mountaineers have won ten-straight contests and come into the game with a 16/22 ranking in the national polls. WVU is allowing just 0.79 goals per contest while scoring 2.00 goals per game. Junior Blake Miller leads the team with 10 goals while adding four assists for 24 points. Senior goalkeeper Kerri Butler has started every game this season while recording 11 shutouts. She boasts an impressive 0.77 goals against average.
The Huskies own a 9-2-2 record in the BIG EAST Semifinals with both ties ending in a Connecticut victory in penalty kicks. UConn stands at 9-9-3 in BIG EAST Tournament games away from Morrone Stadium.
