BOCA RATON, Fla. - A three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning was not enough as the University of Connecticut softball team dropped their third game of the Miken Classic 5-4 to No. 18 Florida State at Florida Atlantic University, Saturday.
After the late inning scare, the Huskies drop to 1-6 on the year while the Seminoles improve to 18-2 on the season.
Down four runs with just three outs to go, Jessica Arremony (Griswold, Conn.) started off the rally for the Huskies in the bottom of the seventh reaching first via the base on balls. Just one batter later, pinch hitter Megan Apper (Commack, N.Y.) singled to third base advancing all the way to third after an error by the Florida State thirdbaseman Tiffani Brown and scoring Arremony to bring the FSU lead to just three.
Jen Ward (Waterford, Conn.) came back in to run for Apper at third base and crossed home plate one batter later as Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) singled to centerfield. Brittany Duclos (Mystic, Conn.) advanced Towers up a base on a single to right field and the two each advanced up a base after a wild pitch by Seminoles pitcher Terese Gober.
After a pitching change, Towers scored on a RBI groundout to third base by Amy DeLuca (Bordentown, N.J.) bringing the lead to just one run. After a hit to the mound by Amy Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.), Duclos tried to score to tie the game up but was thrown out at home which ended the Huskies threat and the game 5-4.
The Seminoles got three runs on the board before the Huskies were able to score their first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Duclos doubled down the leftfield line and was brought home by DeLuca one batter later. FSU erased that run in the top of the sixth when Morgan Bullock and Brown rounded the bases making their lead 5-1 before the seventh inning rally.
UConn split the pitching duty on the day as Tricia Sullivan (New Bedford, Mass.) pitched the first four innings allowing three earned runs while striking out one. Ali Adelman (San Diego, Calif.) came into the game in relief of Sullivan in the fifth inning pitching the final three innings for the Huskies, striking out two.
The Huskies will return to action on Sunday in their final day of the Miken Classic when they take on Eastern Michigan at 11:00 a.m. and the host team of Florida Atlantic at 5:00 p.m.
