NEW YORK, N.Y. - Sean Evans scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead 13th-seeded St. John's to a 73-51 victory over 12th-seeded Connecticut in the 2010 Men's BIG EAST Basketball Championship First Round game before a sellout crowd of 19,375 at Madison Square Garden.
The loss, the fourth in succession for the Huskies, drops their record on the season to 17-15. The Red Storm improves to 17-14 with the win.
The loss marks the fifth consecutive season the Huskies have been eliminated from the BIG EAST Tournament in their first game.
Connecticut was plagued by two things that hurt them all season; turnovers and poor foul shooting. The Huskies committed 20 turnovers and shot just six-of-18 from the foul line.
The Huskies were led in scoring during the contest by sophomore point guard Kemba Walker (Bronx, N.Y.), who scored 12 points. However, Walker shot just 4-of-17 from the field.
Also in double figures for Connecticut were senior forwards Gavin Edwards (Gilbert, Ariz.) and Stanley Robinson (Birmingham, Ala.). Edwards had 11 points off of the bench, while Robinson scored 10 points and yanked down a team-high eight rebounds.
St. John's had led by as many 17 in the first half before the Huskies scored the last four points of the half to cut the deficit to 13 at intermission. Connecticut seemed to have a burst of energy to start the second half, reducing the deficit to eight on two occasions, but turnovers and poor foul shooting hurt the Huskies' chances.
The Red Storm put the game away with an 11-1 run late in the second half after Connecticut had inched to within nine points. That scoring spurt was extended to 23-7 as St. John's shot 60 percent from the field in the second half.
Senior guard Jerome Dyson (Potomac, Md.), who earlier in the week was named along with teammate Walker, to the BIG EAST Third Team, was held to just four points. Dyson, who entered the contest as the Huskies' leading scorer, committed a career-high nine turnovers in the game.
Paris Horne and Justin Brownlee each scored 13 points for St. John's, who made seven-of-13 from three-point range.
