STORRS, Conn. - Behind a 3-for-4 effort by Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) and a 2-for-4 effort by Justyne Roy (North Dighton, Mass.), the University of Connecticut softball team got back to their winning ways with a 8-3 victory over Quinnipiac Tuesday.
Towers had two singles and a homerun in the game driving in two and scoring two of her own, while Roy's two hits were both singles as she also drove in two runners on the day.
The Huskies improve to 17-19 on the year and 13-14 in non-conference play, improving their home record to 6-4. Quinnipiac evens things out at 18-18.
The Husky bats wasted no time welcoming Bobcats starter Emily Bellush to Storrs. Towers got things rolling for the Huskies with an infield single and Roy, Amy Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.) and Marissa Guches (Sammamish, Wa.) all followed with RBI base hits. The Huskies held a 3-0 advantage just one inning into the game.
UConn got right back to work in the bottom half of the second. With one aboard Towers lined a Bellush pitch over the left field fence for a two-run homer bringing the Huskies' lead to 5-0 after two innings. While the Huksy bats were putting the runs on the board, starter Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.) was stifling the Quinnipiac bats.
The Bobcats finally broke through in the top of the fourth inning. After being held hitless through the first three frames Quinnipiac was able to finally break though against Saveriano. The Bobcats strung together five hits and pushed across two runs cutting the deficit to 5-2.
Quinnipiac reliever Heather Swartzburg took over for Bellush in the bottom half of the fourth. Bellush struggled opening up the frame with a walk to Amanda Martin (Rowley, Mass.) and Towers singled with one out. Amy DeLuca (Bordentown, N.J.) was hit by a pitch and Roy then singled in a run. That was all the Huskies were able to muster as Swartzburg got herself out of trouble and the Huskies held a 6-2 lead after four innings of play.
Jessica Arremony (Griswold, Conn.) started the Huskies up in the bottom of the fifth delivering the first triple of the season by a Husky player. Martin followed it with a rip to center and at the end of five innings Connecticut held a commanding 7-2 lead.
Quinnipiac got one back in the top of the sixth, but the Huskies responded in the bottom half of the frame. Brittany Duclos (Mystic, Conn.) sent a towering fly ball to left field where the Bobcat outfielder bobbled it for the error. Duclos legged out the hit ending on third where she was driven in one batter later by DeLuca on a rip up the middle to keep the lead at five.
Saveriano finished the game pitching 5.1 innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs and striking out five. Ali Adelman (San Diego, Calif.) finished the game out for the Huskies with 1.2 innings pitched and two hits allowed.
The Huskies return to action Wednesday, April 14 at 4 p.m. when they take on Dartmouth in Storrs.
