STORRS, Conn. - The No. 20/19 UConn baseball team has been selected as the No. 2 seed of the 2010 BIG EAST Baseball Championship to be held Wednesday-Sunday, May 26-30 at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla. UConn will take on Cincinnati at 1:00 p.m. on the first day of tournament play as the Huskies are making their 12th all-time BIG EAST Baseball Championship appearance.
The tournament's opening ceremonies and awards presentations will be Tuesday, May 25 at 6:00 p.m. at Bright House Field, followed by the first-ever BIG EAST Home Run Derby at 7:00 p.m.
UConn finished the regular season with a 43-12 overall record along with a 20-6 mark in conference play to earn the second seed in the postseason tournament. This is the best seeding for the Huskies since 2006, when UConn was tagged as the No. 2 team heading into BIG EAST Championship play. UConn has now made the BIG EAST Baseball Championship field for the fifth time in the last six seasons.
Cincinnati will enter the postseason with a 29-27 record after finishing the regular season by sweeping Georgetown to earn the No. 7 seed.
Louisville will be the No. 1 seed in the tournament for the second straight year, edging the Huskies for the top spot by sweeping Notre Dame in its final weekend series to win the 2010 BIG EAST Regular Season title by a half game. Louisville enters the postseason with a 46-10 overall record, while finishing the year with a 21-6 BIG EAST mark. The Cardinals will take on West Virginia at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening as the Mountaineers grabbed the final spot in the tournament by defeating Villanova 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.
Pittsburgh will be the third seed and will take on No. 6 Rutgers at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning. During the 2010 regular season, the Scarlet Knights took two games of their three-game series against the Panthers.
St. John's and South Florida round out the tournament field as the Red Storm will be the No. 4 seed with the Bulls earning the fifth seed. That contest will be played at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday night prior to the Louisville/West Virginia match-up.
The BIG EAST Championship is an eight-team, double-elimination tournament, with the championship game scheduled for Sunday, May 30 at noon (EST). The winner of the tournament receives the BIG EAST's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. St. John's and Notre Dame have won a conference-best five tournament titles each, while Louisville has won the last two. UConn has won two tournament titles, dating back to 1990 and 1994.
The May 30 BIG EAST Championship game will be televised live on ESPNU, marking the fifth straight year in which the title game will be carried live on the ESPN family of networks. In addition, every UConn game can be heard on WTIC News Talk 1080 at WTIC.com with Joe D'Ambrosio as well as 91.7 WHUS at WHUS.org.
