EUGENE, Ore. - After day one competition, University of Connecticut women's track athlete Trisha-Ann Hawthorne has moved onto the 100-meter finals. The senior sprinter finished the race in third place in a season best time of 11.38 seconds after winning her heat.
Hawthorne was bested by Jeneba Tarmoh (11.05) of Texas A&M and Blessing Oakboro (11.21) of Texas-El Paso. Her time was just .01 seconds off of her personal best and school record time set in 2008.
She is the first sprinter in UConn track history to make it to the final round.
"Trisha looked the part of a national finalist," said Head Coach Bill Morgan. "She was relaxed, confident and focused and her start was explosive and controlled. She ran a gret race setting herself up in friday's finals. Coach [Clive] Terralonge had her prepped all season and set her up for great things this week. This is huge in so many ways."
Also competing for the Huskies on the day was Mandela Graves-Fulgham in the 400 meter run semifinals. Graves-Fulgham finished her race in 12th place with a time of 54.13 seconds.
Both Graves-Fulgham and Hawthorne also competed in the 4x100 meter relay race earlier in the day that took 15th place in the semifinal round with a time of 44.89.
The relay was headed by Phylicia George, the second leg was run by Hawthorne, Kristen Brown took the third leg and Graves-Fulgham ran the anchor for the Huskies.
The women's team will return to action on Friday, June 11 when Hawthorne competes in the 100 meter final at 5:30 p.m. PT/8:30 p.m. ET.
