STORRS, Conn. - Four different Huskies scored and junior back Allison Angulo notched a three-point afternoon to lead the No. 4 University of Connecticut field hockey team past No. 19 Louisville, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at the George J. Sherman Family Sport Complex in Storrs, Conn. With the win, UConn improves to 9-1 on the year and 3-0 in BIG EAST play. The Cardinals slip to 7-4, 1-2.
The Huskies have now won 33-consecutive games when scoring at least three goals and the Connecticut defense allowed only two goals for only the third time this season.
The Cardinals got the board first when Dominique Pasqualichio netted her third goal of the season just 5:43 into the contest. U of L was awarded one of its four penalty corners and took advantage when Pasqualichio hit a shot past Sarah Mansfield to garner the 1-0 edge.
It looked like Louisville could go up 2-0 when Angulo was hit with a yellow card less than six-minutes later but the UConn defense buckled down and held the Cards scoreless when they had a one-player advantage.
The Huskies restored parity after freshman standout Chloe Hunnable converted on one of Connecticut's seven penalty corners. Hunnable nailed a shot past a diving Erin Conrad and it hit hard off the board to knot the score at one goal apiece.
Angulo's first goal of the season came less than six-minutes later after Hunnable struck another hard shot that was saved by Conrad. The rebound deflected out to Marie Elena Bolles, who redirected the rebound towards Angulo. Angulo was waiting by the far post and she poked the ball into the goal and the Huskies regained a lead they would not relinquish.
The eventual game-winner came courtesy of Jestine Angelini at the 32:23 mark. Angelini's sixth goal of the season came off a corner and saw her convert on one of her patented drag flicks.
Senior defender Rayell Heistand added some more insurance after she converted on penalty stroke and the Husky defense didn't allow a goal until Kelsey Rosenmeier scored with less than three minutes remaining in regulation. It was too little too late for U Of L though as the Huskies cruised to a 4-2 victory.
Connecticut held a 17-to-10 advantage in shots. Mansfield made two saves for the Huskies while Conrad stopped six shots for U of L.
The Huskies will play their third game in five days when they travel to New Haven, Conn. to take on Yale tomorrow. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
