Huskies Go 16-2 Overall At New England Invitational

The UConn women's tennis program concluded an excellent weekend at the New England Invitational hosted by Sacred Heart and Fairfield. The Huskies concluded the tournament with a 16-2 overall record and an 8-1 doubles record. Maxene Weinberg won her flight at No. 2 singles.
The Huskies went on to win four of the six singles flights and two of the three doubles brackets.
Freshman Maxene Weinberg took No. 2 singles beginning with a 6-0, 6-2 victory in the opening match. After earning an impressive come-from-behind victory (1-6, 6-1 (10-5)) in the semifinals, Weinberg breezed through the championship with a 6-2, 6-4 result.
In No. 1 singles, sophomore Jennifer Learmonth placed third while senior Alexa Gregory took fifth. Learmonth won the third-place match, 8-6. Gregory fell in the opening match but won back-to-back matches to place fifth.
Sophomore Lucy Nutting took the No. 3 singles flight with three-straight victories. She advanced to the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-2 result. After posting a 7-5, 6-4 victory, Nutting claimed the bracket with a 6-3, 6-4 result in the finals.
Sophomore Marie Gargiulo advanced to the finals of No. 4 singles with convincing victories in her first two matches (6-2, 6-0/6-1, 6-1). Gargiulo dropped sets of 6-3, 6-2 in the finals.
Connecticut's Lauren Wilmarth claimed the No. 5 singles flight while Abby McKeon took No. 6 singles. Wilmarth won 6-2, 6-3 while McKeon needed a tiebreaker to earn her flight, 6-1, 4-6 (10-5).
In doubles action, Learmonth and Weinberg took No. 1 with three hard-fought results. The duo won (-8 (4) in the opener and 9-7 in the semifinals. The finals took extras as well with UConn earning a 9-8 (6) result.
No. 2 doubles was won with ease by Gregory and Gargiulo. The tandem won three-straight matches by an 8-2 score.
The Huskies will prepare for a dual match against Quinnipiac on Wednesday, October 18 in Hamden, Conn. beginning at 2 p.m.
