The UConn women's track and field team competed today in day one of the NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas and celebrated a First Team All-America performance from junior Victoria Flowers in the weight throw. Flowers placed fourth to earn All-America honors for the third time in her career.
Flowers had a personal best throw today of 22.24m (72' 11.75"). Indiana State's Felisha Johnson won the NCAA Title with a top throw of 22.6m (74' 5.5").
"It was just an incredible performance today by Victoria. She continues to set new PR's in the biggest stages. She's just an incredible athlete," said Head Coach Bill Morgan.
UConn competed in three other events on the first day of competition. Junior Heather Wilson advanced to the finals of the 800m with her time of 2:05.76. She placed fifth and will run in the finals on Saturday at 6:20 p.m.
The UConn 4,000m distance medley relay squad had a disappointing performance tonight in the NCAA Championships. After running 10:59.99 last weekend, the quartet ran 11:28.43 placing 12th. Senior Leah Andrianos ran 3:26.01 in the opening 1,200m followed by freshman Celina Emerson's 54.38 in the 400m. Sophomore Brigitte Mania ran 2:09.06 in the 800m before Wilson anchored with a mile run of 4:58.99.
Senior Trisha-Ann Hawthorne ended her illustrious indoor career in the prelims of the 60m dash running 7.37 and placing 16th to earn Second Team All-America Honors. Hawthorne will look for an NCAA Title in the outdoor season after earning All-America status in the 100m last year.
UConn will have two athletes compete tomorrow with Wilson running in the 800m and Flowers competing in the shot put.
