PROVIDENCE, R.I. - UConn baseball's Matt Barnes has been named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon. For the junior, it is his first major BIG EAST accolade of the season after being named to the league's honor roll on March 7.
Barnes threw his second career complete game shutout in UConn's 4-0 win over San Diego on March 12. He went nine innings, allowing just two hits and one walk, while striking out two batters.
The Bethel, Conn. native leads UConn on the year with 29.1 innings thrown and 28 strikeouts. The shutout helped improve his ERA on the season to 1.53, while his career mark has moved to 3.98.
Mike Nemeth was named to the weekly honor roll for his efforts as the senior batted .522 to lead the Huskies on the week. He was 12-for-23 with seven runs scored and two RBI. He recorded two doubles to add to his program-leading tally of 59. At first base, the senior recorded 50 putouts and two assists with no errors for a perfect fielding percentage during the five-game stint.
UConn will host Sacred Heart University on Tuesday, March 15 at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, Conn. The game is open to the public and is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
