Huskies To Host Pittsburgh In Three Game Set

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut softball team will host Pittsburgh in a three-game set this weekend beginning with a double-header starting at Noon on Saturday. The two teams will finish the weekend series with an 11 a.m. contest on Sunday. All games will be played at the Connecticut Softball Stadium and are free to the public.
UConn (16-17) currently sits in fifth in the BIG EAST standings with a 4-3 conference record. Pittsburgh owns an impressive 24-13 record overall but stands at ninth in the standings at 3-5.
The Huskies most recently earned a split on the road at Louisville. UConn lost game one, 2-1, in the seventh inning before taking game two 5-1. The Connecticut offense is currently scoring 4.9 runs per game. During the last eight games, UConn has scored 6.4 runs per game.
Senior captain Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) has led the charge all season. She leads the team in nearly every offensive category including batting average (.380), runs (24), hits (41), doubles (14) home runs (7) and RBI (29).
Sophomore Kim Silva (Cheshire, Conn.) has come on strong for Connecticut in her second season. She's currently batting .347. Silva has been a pest on the base paths as well, swiping 13 bases in 15 attempts. In BIG EAST games, Silva has hit .429.
Sophomore hurler Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.) leads the pitching staff with a 9-12 record and a team-best 3.03 ERA. She's tallied 119 strikeouts in 127 innings pitched. Against Louisville earlier this week, Saveriano pitched both games, allowing just three runs. All three runs scored against Connecticut were unearned.
Pittsburgh boasts a pitching staff with three members owning sub-2.00 ERAs. Karlyn Jones leads the staff with an 8-5 record and a 1.57 ERA. She's recorded 72 strikeouts in 80.1 innings pitched.
Offensively, the Panthers boast two players with over 30 RBI this season. Kelly Hmiel leads the team with a .363 batting average and 36 RBI while Holly Stevens is batting .345 with 32 RBI.
