STORRS, Conn. - UConn's Matt Barnes and George Springer were named to the Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-American First Team as announced Thursday, June 2 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
The 17-man first team, chosen by performances up to regional playoffs and picked by the staff of Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, features 11 conference players or pitchers of the year. The first team also features six starting pitchers who posted a combined 68-9 record with an ERA of 1.31. Trevor Bauer of UCLA was named Collegiate Baseball's National Player of The Year as he had the most strikeouts in the nation this season with 189 and threw nine complete games, including eight in a row to end the regular season.
Barnes was named the 2011 BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year, while going 11-3 on the year with a 1.12 ERA in 15 starts. With 11 wins in the regular season, Barnes became just the third Husky ever to win 10 or more games in a single-season.
Springer, who was selected as the 2011 BIG EAST Player of the Year for his efforts in 2011, is batting .361 and has 74 RBI, 53 runs scored and 12 home runs to lead the Huskies this season. He also has hit 22 doubles on the year. With 46 career home runs, Springer is UConn's all-time home run leader.
Barnes and Springer were both unanimous picks for the 2011 All-BIG EAST First Team as well.
This marks the 15th year that Louisville Slugger has sponsored the Division I All-Americans.
