STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's tennis program had a successful weekend hosting the UConn Invitational. The Huskies finished the weekend with an impressive 20-6 record, including a 14-4 overall mark in singles play as a team. The doubles units also performed well, finishing with a 6-2 mark on Friday afternoon.
Senior Scott Warden and freshman Jacob Spreyer both went 2-0 in singles play on Sunday after combining to go 2-0 in doubles play Friday afternoon.
In doubles action, Warden and Spreyer won convincingly, defeating a tandem from Hartford, 8-1, and a duo from Sacred Heart, 8-3.
Warden went on to defeat Hartford in singles action, 6-2, 6-1, and Boston University, 7-6, 7-6.
Spreyer earned a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Quinnipiac before surpassing Boston University, 6-3, 6-3.
In other doubles action, senior Matt Burns and sophomore Ryan Carr went 2-0. The duo defeated Quinnipiac, 8-6, before handling Boston University, 8-2.
Senior Jai Yoon and junior Wei Lin split their two matches in doubles as did sophomore Teddy Margules and freshman Peter Surovic. Yoon and Lin bested Sacred Heart, 8-2, but fell to Boston University, 8-6. Margules and Surovic suffered an 8-2 defeat to Bryant only to bounce back with an 8-5 victory over Hartford.
Lin earned back-to-back victories in singles, as did Surovic. Lin defeated Quinnipiac, 6-2, 6-4 before besting Sacred Heart, 6-4, 6-2. Surovic easily defeated Bryant, 6-1, 6-3 and made short work of Sacred Heart, 6-0, 6-0.
Margules won his first match, 6-2, 6-1 over Sacred Heart but fell to Bryant, 6-4, 6-0.
Burns and freshman Joshua Palmer each split their singles matches on the weekend. Burns defeated Boston University, 7-6, 6-2 but fell to Quinnipiac, 5-7, 6-3 (10-3). Palmer suffered a 6-4, 6-3 defeat in his first match and earned a hard-fought victory over Hartford, 7-5, 7-6 in the second match of the weekend.
The team will compete in a dual match against Hartford on Wednesday beginning at 3 p.m.
