PROVIDENCE, R.I.- It was announced by the BIG EAST Conference on Tuesday afternoon that Connecticut women's cross country sophomore Lauren Sara (Stratford, Conn.) was named this week's Female BIG EAST Athlete of the Week. This marks only the second time in program history that a Husky has earned this accolade.
Sara was awarded this honor after taking first place at the CCSU Blue Devil Invite on Friday, September 2, with a new personal best of 17:10.
"Lauren was in complete control in her race on Friday and I cannot wait to see her when she has someone pushing her in a race. She stayed healthy all summer and was able to build on the phenomenal outdoor track season that she had as a freshman. I am really looking forward to watching her throughout the season and seeing what she is capable of," stated Head Coach Andrea Grove-McDonough.
Sara's strong start to the season comes after a stellar freshman show as she was UConn's top finisher at the BIG EAST Championships, placing 30th in 22:06. Additionally, Sara was the top Husky finisher at the NCAA Northeast Regionals with a 21:19 time and 41st place finish.
Sara and the Huskies look to continue their strong performance on Saturday, September 10, at the Bryant Invitational in Smithfield, R.I.
