CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Huskies softball team dropped two games on day one at the Charleston Southern softball tournament on Friday morning. UConn moves to 1-4 on the season with their 5-3 loss to Wisconsin and 8-0 fall to Kansas.
In game one, freshman right-hander Lauren Duggan had her college debut as she threw four innings and gave up four runs and two earned runs on seven hits. The Norwood, Mass. native fell to 0-1 on the season and was replaced by sophomore Katelyn Callahan (Queensbury, N.Y.).
Redshirt junior Marissa Guches (Sammamish, Wash.) led the squad over both games tallying three hits and a RBI, while freshman shortstop Emily O'Donnell (Niskayuna, N.Y.) had a hit, a RBI and scored a run for the Huskies.
The Badgers took a four run lead following back-to-back two run innings in the third and fourth on five hits and three UConn errors.
The Huskies replied in the top of the fifth when junior Kim Silva (Cheshire, Conn.) pinch ran for Guches who singled up the middle. With two outs and Silva on first, junior Jess McDermott (Clarksburg, N.J.) hit a RBI-double to center field to bring UConn closer to the Wisconsin setting the score at 4-1.
Trailing 5-1, the Huskies added two to the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning but would finish with a 5-3 loss to the Badgers. Senior Jen Ward (Clarksburg, N.J.) scored on a triple by O'Donnell. O'Donnell would score on Guches' second hit of the game.
The Huskies concluded the game with five hits, while the Badgers notched 10.
In the second game, Connecticut was blanked, 8-0, by a stellar Kansas squad who improved to 13-3 with their victory over the Huskies. The Huskies sent three hurlers to the mound, but the Jayhawks velocity was too much to contain. Junior pitcher Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.) started the game and was handed the loss after throwing five innings and allowing eight hits and four runs with two being earned. Saveriano moves to 1-2 on the season with the Kansas loss.
Replacing Saveriano was Callahan who struggled from the circle allowing two hits and two earned runs in 0.1 inning before senior Ali Adelman (San Diego, Calif.) came in to conclude the game early in six innings.
At the plate, Guches was the lone Husky to register a hit guaranteeing that Kansas freshman hurler Alicia Pile would not have a perfect game against Connecticut.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday morning against the hosting Charleston Southern at 11 a.m.
