Chris Gbandi Named Assistant Coach at Holy Cross

STORRS, Conn. - Chris Gbandi, former assistant director of soccer operations at Connecticut, has been named Assistant Coach at Holy Cross. Gbandi served one season on the sidelines at UConn in 2011, helping to guide the Huskies to the NCAA Quarterfinals and a 19-3-3 record. UConn was ranked No. 1 for four weeks in 2011 and ended the season ranked No. 5 by the NSCAA.
Gbandi came to UConn after a successful professional career beginning as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 MLS Draft by the Dallas Burn. Gbandi went on to play professionally in Europe following a successful stint in Dallas.
Gbandi, who was born in Liberia and graduated from UConn in 2002, enjoyed one of the most successful careers in UConn history, beginning in 1998 when he was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year.
He was later honored as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year in 1999, 2000 and 2001. He went on to be named a First Team All-American in 2000 and 2001 and a Second Team All-American in 1999. Gbandi received the Hermann Trophy in 2000 as the National Player of the Year after leading UConn to the NCAA Championship.
