STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team got a three-hit day from Blake Davey but dropped a weekend conference series to Temple, falling in game three by a score of 6-2 on Saturday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field. The loss drops UConn to 18-19 on the year and 5-6 in The American, while Temple improves to 12-19 and 6-8 in league play.
Davey (Newport Beach, Calif.) went 3-for-4 to lead a UConn offense that actually out-hit Temple, 11-7, on the day. It marked the 18th multi-hit game of the year and third of the series for Davey, most among any Husky.
UConn also got a 2-for-2 outing from Max McDowell (North Huntingdon, Pa.), who reached base safely four times. Bobby Melley (Barnstable, Mass.) and Ryan Sullivan (Hopkinton, Mass.) recorded two hits apiece, and Griffin Garabedian (Hamden, Conn.) was 1-for-4 with Connecticut's lone RBI.
Anthony Kay (Stony Brook, N.Y.) made the start for the Huskies and lasted 6.2 innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts. He was opposed by Ryan Kuehn (3-2) who tossed six frames of one-run ball with six hits, two walks and a strikeout.
Temple struck first in the top of the second, when Kay (3-3) uncorked a wild pitch with runners on the corners to allow Robert Amaro to scamper home. The Owls plated two more in the top of the third, using an RBI double and a sacrifice fly to take a 3-0 lead.
Jack Sundberg (Mansfield, Conn.) got UConn on the board in the bottom of the third. After a leadoff single, Sundberg stole second and moved to third on a groundout, before he scored on a wild pitch.
Kay settled in over the middle innings, tossing three straight scoreless frames until the top of the seventh. After an error prolonged the inning, the Owls drew a bases loaded walk before scoring another unearned run on a wild pitch that chased Kay.
The Huskies threatened in the bottom of the seventh when Davey singled before a Melley double with two outs, but Temple reliever Simon Mathews got a ground ball to end the frame. The Owls scored a run in the eighth to go ahead by five, but the Huskies got it back when Garabedian drove in McDowell after a leadoff double.
Patrick Ruotolo (Peabody, Mass.) came out of the pen in the ninth and fired a scoreless frame to keep it a four-run game, but the Huskies were unable to generate anything in the ninth.
UConn returns to action on Monday for the first of three midweek games next week. The Huskies welcome Central Connecticut State to Storrs for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
