NEW YORK - After matching a career-high with 15 saves in UConn's 6-4 win over Fairfield last week, Connecticut goalkeeper Shannon Nee (Lancaster, Pa.) has earned Big East Defender of the Week honors, as announced by the league on Tuesday morning. The accolade marks the first weekly award for the UConn junior standout this season.
Nee turned in her best performance of the season against the Stags on March 18, tallying double-digit saves for the third time this year. She also added two ground balls for the Huskies, who have held their opponent to under 10 goals in four of their last five matches.
The Lancaster, Pa. native ranks 18th among Division I keepers in save percentage (.487) and her 75 saves in 2015 are the 19th-best total nationally. She has totaled a team-high 20 ground balls this season, and her 8.3 saves per match stand as the 24th-highest total in Division I.
Nee has now won six Conference Defensive Player of the Week awards throughout her time at UConn, and she was named to the All-Big East First Team last year as a sophomore. She has earned IWLCA All-Northeast Region First Team honors in each of her previous two seasons in Storrs, and she boasts a career record of 26-16.
Nee and the Huskies are back in action on Saturday when they open Big East play on the road against Cincinnati. The match gets underway at 12 p.m.
