Huskies Win Great Dane Classic on Saturday

ALBANY, N.Y. - The UConn men's track and field team continued an impressive open to the 2016 indoor season when it won the Great Dane Classic, hosted by Albany, on Saturday, Jan. 16.
The Huskies finished in the top position with 110.25 team points, checking in ahead of Navy (100.75) and Buffalo (67.5). For complete individual and team results, please CLICK HERE.
"This was a heck of a win for our team," said head coach Greg Roy. "We had a lot of contributors. It looked like we were in a little bit of trouble halfway through and all of a sudden we were in it. It came right down until the end and we had four freshmen step up in the 4x400m to get the job done and seal the win."
Sophomore Trenten Beram earned a bronze medal and eight points for the Huskies in the 200m, finishing in 21.40 seconds, while teammate Chinedu Amonu nabbed fifth with a time of 21.44 seconds. Beram continued a strong meet with a sixth-place finish in the 400m dash, crossing the finish line in 48.28 seconds.
In the 500m, freshman Nasir Haines was the team's top finisher, taking fourth with a time of 1:04.16. Another freshman, Kyle Barber, collected an eighth-place finish in the 800m, checking in at 1:53.39.
Peter Garmon continued his strong freshman season with a third-place finish in the 1,000m run (2:28.22), finishing ahead of teammate Chris Heydrick (2:30.02), who took sixth. Heydrick also earned six points for the team with a fourth-place finish in the mile run, finishing in 4:12.17.
Freshman Kyle Brackman led the way in the 5,000m run, earning an eighth-place finish at 14:52.75, while Selwynn Maxwell was the top collegiate finisher in the 60m hurdles, earning 10 points with a stellar 7.97 second finish. In the same event, Stephon Henry grabbed fifth with a time of 8.09 seconds.
UConn's 4x400m relay team (Amonu, Beram, Aaeron Sykes, Robert Hovanec) secured the team win with a seventh-place finish (3:20.08).
On the field, Demario Gray grabbed 4.5 points with a fourth-place finish in the high jump, registering a leap of 1.99m. Two Huskies, Chandler Ives (4.80m) and Tim Murphy (4.80m) combined for 14 points in the pole vault, taking second and third, respectively.
Senior captain Oluwatosin Edwards collected a pair of points with seventh-place finish in the shot put (15.90m before winning the weight throw (19.42m) by over 1.20m. Teammate and fellow captain Chris Ackell placed fourth in the event with a toss of 17.78m.
The meet field included competitors from Navy, George Mason, Albany, Buffalo, Rutgers, Sacred Heart, Central Connecticut, and Villanova.
Saturday's meet marked the first time UConn had competed at the Great Dane Classic since it claimed its third-straight title in 2014.
The team returns to the road next weekend when it heads to Manhattan, N.Y. to participate in the Manhattan College Invite.
