UConn Wins Second-Straight Indoor Title

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - For the second-consecutive year, the UConn women's track and field team captured the indoor American Athletic Conference championship crown, topping competition from 10 teams during a two-day stretch at the Birmingham Metro CrossPlex on Feb. 28-29. The Huskies compiled 110 total team points, edging out Cincinnati (98.5) and UCF (91.5).
The title marks UConn's fourth indoor conference crown after winning Big East indoor titles in 2008 and 2009 and the 2015 American crown. Second-year head coach J.J. Clark earns his second conference title at Connecticut and fifth overall indoor coaching crown after winning three SEC indoor championships with Tennessee.
"What a fantastic team win," said Clark. "We had to overcome adversity to produce this win. Laura Williamson had a great win inthe 3K to help seal the victory. We got crucial points in the jumps, 400m and almost 30 points in the 800. This is a great team and a great team win."
Following the action on the track, the UConn coaching staff of Clark, associate head coach Clive Terrelonge and assistant coach Lisa Misipeka were tabbed as the league's indoor Coaching Staff of the Year.
Senior Laura Williamson shined in the 3,000m run, taking a gold medal and earning the team 10 points with a 9:43.47, shattering her previous career-best of 10:00.77. Freshman Courtney Ackerley took 12th in the event with a time of 10:06.47.
The Huskies' 4x400m relay team (Smith-Jenkins, Taft, Over, Parker) collected a bronze medal in the meet's final event, crossing the finish line in 3:41.65.
The Huskies dominated the field in the 800m run final, collecting 28 points as a team. Freshman Hannah Parker earned a silver medal with a team-best 2:08.14 second performance, followed by teammates Alexis Panisse (2:08.39), Kat Vodopia (2:08.86), Sydnee Over (2:09.24), Katie Foley (2:10.73), Lisa Zimmer (2:12.15) and Emily Howard (2:12.77).
Panisse continued a strong meet with a second-place finish in the mile run final, finishing the race in 4:56.25, just ahead of teammates Laura Wililamson (4:56.45) and Liz Lagoy (5:00.46).
Odrine Belot and Sarah Bowens teamed up for seven combined points in the triple jump. Belot took third with a leap of 12.63m, while Bowens checked in in eighth with a mark of 11.92m.
Kelly Myers was UConn's top finisher in the shotput, claiming 14th with a toss of 13.38m.
