Huskies Compete at 2016 Penn Challenge

PHILADELPHIA - The UConn men's track and field team opened up the 2016 outdoor season on Saturday, March 26 with a second-place finish at the Penn Challenge at historic Franklin Field.
The Huskies ended the one-day meet with 164.5 team points, trailing only meet-host Penn. Army West Point finished with 138 points, while Rider (56), Villanova (29), and Sacred Heart (6) rounded out the competition field.
"We're disappointed in the outcome of the meet in terms of team scoring but we had some nice individual performances today," said head coach Greg Roy. "We have a long way to go but plenty of time to do it if we continue to work hard."
Michael O'Donnell won the 5,000m run, crossing the finish line in 14:24.84, while Aidan Fiol nabbed eighth in the event with a finish of 15:22.11 seconds.
On the field, Patrick Meyer (6.83m) and Amanze Williams (6.81m) teamed up for 18 points in the long jump, taking first and second, respectively. In the same event, Josh Marriner grabbed a point with a 6.58m leap.
Malik Snead won the triple jump with a leap of 14.64m, while Harley Lacroix (14.10m) and Demario Gray (13.10m) finished second and sixth, respectively.
Chris Ackell's 57.63m hammer throw result was the meet's top mark, while fellow senior Oluwatosin Edwards collected six points with a toss of 56.33m. Seth Zuidema (64.96m) and Adam Boucher (63.73m) paved the way for the field in the javelin throw, taking first and second, respectively.
Craig Hunter returned to action with a silver medal finish in the pole vault, notching a leap of 5.10m and topping teammates Chandler Ives (4.80m) and Tim Murphy (4.70m).
The team picked up 11 points in the 3,000m steeplechase, led by a third-place finish by Wyatt Million (9:24.30). Kyle Barber (9:32.78) and Kevin Rogovich (10:05.84) finished fourth and sixth, respectively.
The Huskies' 4x100m relay team (Delane, Lockhart, Haines, Landis) picked up a third-place finish in the event, crossing the finish line in 42.25. Alvaro Chavez (3:51.93) and Nick Bertoline (3:52.19) teamed up for six team points in the 1,500m run, taking fourth and fifth, respectively.
Two Huskies scored in the 110m hurdle final, led by Stephon Henry's 14.91 second time. In the same event, Patrick Meyer (15.22) placed sixth while Randall Wall (15.27) narrowly missed scoring.
Chinedu Amonu was the team's top finisher in the 100m dash final, collecting four points with a time of 10.96 that was just 0.01 seconds off his career-best, while Selwyn Maxwell earned a point with a result of 11.14m.
Parker Timmerman shined in the 800m run, taking fifth with a time of 1:54.47, edging out teammate Nick O'Leary (1:55.21). Aaeron Sykes (55.09) and Henry (55.33) combined for three point in the 400m hurdles, while Amonu earned a silver medal in the 200m dash and Delane took sixth with a time of 22.55 seconds.
Gray placed fifth in the high jump (1.93m), edging out Tobey Belton (1.93m), who took sixth. Matthew Graziano took bronze in the discus throw with a toss of 50.96m, while Edwards secured third in the shot put with a mark of 15.39m.
The 4x400m relay team (Amonu, Beram, Haines, Sykes) grabbed fourth on Saturday with a time of 3:26.66.
