PRINCETON, N.J. – The UConn men's cross country team turned in a fourth place finish at the Princeton Invitational Friday afternoon. The Huskies came in with a pair of runners in the top-20 to finish fourth in a field of 20 teams.
"That was a solid performance this afternoon," stated head coach Greg Roy. "We got the first look at our complete team and I am really encouraged. Eric was really aggressive early, leading for a while. Pat and Kyle really ran good tough, tough races."
UConn r-senior captain Patrick Begley (Suffield, Conn.) was the Huskies top-finisher by coming home eighth overall in the field of 218 runners. Begley, who made his season debut on Friday, clocked in at 24:20.8 on the 8k course.
"For us to have a 38 second split between our one to five runners is really good," said Roy. "It was a very encouraging day and I think we can still get better."
Senior Kyle Brackman (Berkley Heights, N.J.) was 16th in the field, turning in a time of 24:35.9. R-Sophomore Eric van der Els (Norwalk, Conn.), running in his first 8k race at UConn, was 25th in a time of 24:45.5.Â
Seniors Kyle Barber (Fayetteville, N.Y.) and Mike McGonnigle (New Fairfield, Conn.) rounded-out the Huskies' top-five finishers in 38th and 42nd, respectively. Barber clocked in at 24:55.9 while McGonnigle posted a 24:58.4 in his first race of the fall.
The host Princeton Tigers took home the team title followed by Villanova and Temple in second and third.
The Huskies now move on to the 2018 American Athletic Conference Championship on October 25 being held at Tulane University at The Golf Club at Audubon Park.
