Huskies Record Five Top-Five Finishes at the Hadley Chase
10/13/2018 11:32:00 PM | Women's Rowing
HADLEY, Mass. – The UConn women's rowing team competed in the second annual Hadley Chase on Saturday, Oct. 13 on the Connecticut River. The Huskies asserted their dominance at the race as they ended the day with five top-five finishes in the three events they competed in, including first place finishes in the Women's Collegiate Novice 8+ and the Women's Collegiate Varsity 8+ 500m Dash.
"I am very happy with how our team did today at the Hadley Chase, despite the cold and rainy weather," said head coach Jennifer Sanford. "It's always fun to win, and it was a nice reward for our Varsity 8 to win the 500 meter sprint, and for the freshman 8 to win their event."
Sanford added, "Finishing 3rd and 5th in the Varsity 4 shows our strong depth. Each boat that competed today raced hard and worked together. It was great practice for the fours and the second varsity eight to get another race under their belt before competing at the Head of Charles next weekend."
The Women's Collegiate Varsity 4+ was a closely contested race, with just 15 seconds separating the top-four finishers. The UConn 'A' boat finished with a time of 17:30.1, which was good enough for a third place finish. UConn 'B' also recorded finished in the top-5 (5th), while UConn 'C' ended the race with a twelfth-place finish.
Despite being the only UConn-affiliate in the Women's Collegiate Novice 8+, the UConn boat, led by Megan Stevens, had a fantastic race. Their 17:09.7 finishing time was more than a minute faster than Marist College, who finished second in the event.
The Women's Collegiate Varsity 8+ featured three UConn entries, as UConn 'A' notched a third place finish in the race with a time of 16:08.1. The finishing times of UConn 'B' (16:31.8) and UConn 'C' (17:03.6) were good enough for 11th and 15th place, respectively.
As a result of its top-four finish, the UConn Collegiate Varsity 8+ boat earned a spot in the Women's Collegiate Varsity 8+ 500m Dash, where it won a really close and exciting race, finishing with a time of 1:20.6.
