WORCESTER, Mass. – The UConn rowing team competed Saturday at the Holy Cross Invite on Lake Quinsigamond, facing a competitive field that included Boston College, UMass, MIT, Sacred Heart, and Holy Cross.
Racing took place over 2000 meters in good conditions, with a northeast cross tailwind creating a brisk push across the course. The Huskies turned in solid performances across multiple boats, highlighted by a strong showing in the Third Varsity Eight. UConn's 3V8 led the field from start to finish, claiming first place with a time of 7:07.9, edging Boston College's A entry.
In the Varsity Eight, UConn placed fourth with a time of 6:40.5 in a tightly contested race, finishing behind UMass, MIT, and Boston College. The Second Varsity Eight added another competitive result, taking third overall in 6:58.0, while continuing to close the gap on the top crews.
UConn also saw success in the smaller boats, with the Varsity Four finishing second in 7:31.8, just behind Boston College, and ahead of UMass.
"I'm very proud of our team's performance today. It was a very fast field of boats representing five different conferences," said head coach Jennifer Sanford. "We had a really good week of practice leading up to today, and now that this one is behind us I'm looking forward to two weeks of training before the Eastern Sprints. Special congrats to the Third Varsity Eight, who has won every race they've competed in this spring."
The Huskies will now shift their focus to the Eastern Sprints on May 3, using the next two weeks of training to build on this weekend's momentum and continue sharpening their speed.
