The 2018 MLB Playoffs begin on Tuesday and the UConn baseball program will be well-represented both on and off the field.
Matt Barnes (Red Sox), Scott Oberg (Rockies) and 2017 World Series MVP George Springer (Astros) are the trio of former Huskies that will take the field for October baseball.
Matt Barnes (2011) is having his best statistical season in his fifth season in the big leagues. The right-hander has appeared in 62 games and recorded a 3.65 ERA. The former UConn All-American (2011) has thrown 61.2 innings and struck out 96 over the course of Red Sox historic season. The Red Sox will play the winner of the Yankees/Athletics AL Wild Card Game in the Division Series, beginning Friday.
Scott Oberg (2012) has also experienced a career-season out of the Rockies bullpen with an 8-1 record and 2.45 ERA, an impressive stat line for a team that plays its games at hitter friendly Coors Field. The right-hander accumulated 58.2 innings in the regular season 57-punch outs. The Rockies face the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 8 p.m.
George Springer (2011) has played in 140 games this season despite battling injuries throughout the year. The 2018 All-Star is hitting .265 with 102 runs scored, 26 doubles, 22 home runs and driven in 71. The Astros' outfielder has continued to play gold glove caliber defense with routine highlight reel catches. The Astros are set to play the Cleveland Indians in the ALDS, starting Friday.
The Huskies are also represented in the MLB postseason with Trenton Thunder pitching coach Tim Norton (Yankees), Cleveland Indians instructor Larry Day (Indians) and strength and MILB Performance Coach Eric Yavarone (Dodgers) all helping their organizations reach the postseason.
