STORRS, Conn. – The UConn swim and dive team captured a meet win in its home opener at the newly renovated Wolff-Zackin Natatorium on the Storrs campus. The men defeated Southern Connecticut State, 168-104. While the women beat Southern Connecticut, 175-102, and Central Connecticut State, 164-82.
The addition of new lights and a new record board highlight the renovations and the team thanked a generous donation from the Bauer family and alum Robyn Bauer ('95) with a pre-game ceremony before the meet.
"We are fortunate," said head coach Chris Maiello. "The University has invested quite a bit in upholding this facility to a high standard. We have new lights, a new record board that was generously donated by an alumna and her family, they refurbished the deck last year and there are plans. So it's a great time to be part of our program."
In the pool, the Huskies received some impressive performances from their freshmen class while they competed in their first official home meet.
"It is a four-year process with them and they are off to a really good start," said coach Maiello. "They are who we thought they were in the recruiting process and there are a lot of them [24] on the roster. They took a really nice step from their first meet on the road to this point."
Colby Prouty grabbed wins in the 100 and 200 Breast, Alli Grace a pair of wins in 100 and 200 Fly, Orry Zayit (200 Fly), Jack Gray (1000 Free), Tommy Schurer (100 Back), Emils Jurcik (200 Free) and Justin Corres (1M Dive).
It wasn't just the freshmen that provided the highlights for the Huskies as the veterans put forth great performances, as well.
Senior captain Monica Marcello won both the 1M and 3M dive and set a pool record with a 309.89 in the 1M.
Senior Jackie Van Lew notched first place finishes in the 100 and 200 Freestyles, Julie Hu in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke and sophomore Ryan Dulaney won both the 500 and 1000 Freestyle events.

"Overall, it was a lot of fun," said coach Maiello. "I really like watching our team compete at home and they did a good job. We had a lot of people either sick or injured and we had some student-athletes step up in their place. Now we just need to continue to trust in the training and use this as a building block moving forward."
Next up, the Huskies head to West Point, N.Y. to compete at Army on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 12 p.m.
