Huskies Sweep Holy Cross & Franklin Pierce

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's tennis team finished their fall dual match schedule a perfect 3-0 thanks to a pair of sweeps over Holy Cross and Franklin Pierce on Saturday afternoon at home on the UConn Tennis Courts.
After a weather delayed start, the Huskies beat the Crusaders 4-0, playing the match in clinch format. The finished out the afternoon with a 7-0 sweep over the Ravens for a perfect day on the courts. "The guys played solid tennis from the first point today," commented head coach Reinaldo Valor. "Today was probably our most consistent team performance of the season. So impressed on our execution and overall belief in their shot making."
UConn sophomore John Michael Holtmann (Coral Springs, Fla.) ran his fall singles record to 11-4 thanks to a pair of wins on Saturday. Holtmann took down Holy Cross's Henry Harrs at No. 2, 6-1 and 6-0, in the morning match and then beat Franklin Pierce's Roberto Chong, 6-2 and 6-4. Holtman is 7-3 over his last 10 matches.
Other double winners for UConn on Saturday were seniors Hank Hill (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and Justin Warren (Durham, N.C.). Hill won his early match at No. 3 over Alexander Ruenhorst, 6-1 and 6-3, and finished the day beating Franklin Pierce's Preston Gordon, 6-4 and 6-1, also at No. 3.
Warren was a winner at No. 5, beating Matthew Slowinski of Holy Cross, 6-1 and 6-0, and Yuval Barak of FPU, 6-1 and 6-1. Warren improved to 6-4 this fall and has won three-straight.
Freshman Christian Provenzano (Montclair, N.J.) ran his win streak to three-straight with a win in the afternoon over Andrew Schadt, 6-2 and 6-0. Sophomore Yili Zheng (Shanghai, China) won his match at No. 1 over FPU's James Bisazza, 6-4 and 6-1 while senior Jack McLister (Leesburg, Va.) won at No. 3 over Nkrumah Patrick of FPU, 6-2 and 6-2.
In doubles, the Huskies top-team of Zheng and Hill continued to roll, running their win streak to four-straight with a pair of wins. The duo posted a 6-2 win over HC's Will Chen and Ruenhorst and a 6-0 win over FPU's Chong and Patrick, both at No. 1. The duo is now 11-4 on the season.
The team of McLister and Holtmann won a pair of matches at No. 2, beating Peter Campito and Slowinski to start the day and winning 6-3 over Gordon and Barak in the afternoon. Warren got a pair of doubles wins, pairing with Provenzano for a 6-2 win over Holy Cross and then junior Brady Flanagan (Overland Park, Kans.) for a 6-4 win over FPU. The Huskies as a team are 27-19 this fall in doubles play (.587).
"We still have some great tests to end the fall season," commented Valor. "I'm looking forward to seeing us try to elevate our level of play in the coming weeks."
UConn will play two more fall tournaments starting with next weekend's Army West Point Invitational.
