STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's and women's soccer programs ask that you please join us as we ceremoniously sunset Joseph J. Morrone Stadium at the final men's regular season home game against SMU on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018.
"It's exciting times here at UConn. A new complex is important to men's soccer, women's soccer and the community at large," said Reid. "When it is built, it will be second to none."
Following the conclusion of the game, fans are invited to stay for a brief program and dairy bar ice cream.
Built in 1969, the Joseph J. Morrone Stadium is home to the UConn Men's and Women's Soccer programs. The stadium is named after former UConn Men's Soccer coach, Joe Morrone. Morrone led the Huskies for 28 seasons, had a record of 358-178-53, advanced to three straight semifinals in 1981-1983, and won the national championship in 1981. Morrone, a member of the NSCAA Hall of Fame, retired from coaching in 1996.
Since 1999, the UConn men's program has ranked in the top-five in attendance every year, including leading the nation in average or overall attendance in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008. 2007 and 2011 saw over 50,000 fans cheer on the Huskies. Most recently in 2011, Morrone Stadium was named the fifth-best venue to watch soccer in the NCAA. Both the men's and women's soccer programs have hosted a number of conference and NCAA post-season events over the years.
