BOSTON, Mass. – The UConn rowing team competed in the renowned 54th annual Head of the Charles Regatta this past weekend on the Charles River, racing three boats in two events during Saturday's contest.
"The Head of the Charles always proves to be the most exciting race of the fall," said 22-year head coach Jennifer Sanford. "It's amazing to see how many people from all over the country and the world travel to Boston to compete in this prestigious event." UConn had good representation entering two crews in the Women's Club Fours event and an eight in the Women's Club Eights. Out of the three entries, the Huskies secured two guaranteed spots in the Women's Club Fours event for next year's 55th edition of the Head of the Charles.
Up against some of the nation's most elite rowing teams, the Huskies captured an 11th place finish in the Women's Club Fours on Saturday afternoon. UConn's 'B' boat recorded a time of 19:26.371, just three seconds away from a top-10 finish. UConn's 'A' boat finished in 19:35.453, which was good enough for 13th place.
"We had a solid showing in the Club Fours event between the two UConn boats, with our B boat finishing slightly ahead of our A boat. This group represents the top eight on the team right now, and the competition between the two boats is very high which will make us faster in the long run."
Later on in the afternoon, UConn picked up 22nd place in the Women's Club Eights, finishing in a time of 18:03.391. Although they didn't place as high as they would've liked, Coach Sanford was proud of the crew's effort.
"The Club Eight raced hard and felt they had a solid piece. The crew was UConn's second varsity eight, and in this event they raced against many teams' first varsity eights," said Sanford. "I was happy to hear the members of the eight being so positive about their piece. Ultimately, the most important thing is to do whatever we can to try and put together the perfect race. Regardless of the results on paper, we want the boats to be proud of their performance and effort. The Club Eight definitely experienced that today."
UConn faced talented programs from Marist, Tennessee and Duke, as well as Ivy League powers Radcliffe, Penn and Yale. Overall, the Huskies had a strong performance and look to continue making progress through the next week.
"I'm looking forward to the Head of the Schuylkill next weekend as we wrap up our fall racing. We plan to get some good practices in this week and see what kind of speed we can bring to Philadelphia."
