PENNSAUKEN, N.J. – The UConn rowing team turned in its strongest finish in program history Saturday at the CAA Championship on the Cooper River, placing second overall for the first time in program history while recording runner-up finishes in all three scoring races. Racing took place over 2000 meters against a competitive conference field that included Northeastern, Drexel, Villanova, UC San Diego, UAlbany, and Monmouth.
Following the championship, Emma Danaher, Dasha Potapov, Nadia Potapov, and Eva Radov were named to the CAA All-Conference Team, while head coach Jennifer Sanford earned CAA Coach of the Year honors for the first time in her career.
In the First Varsity Eight, UConn placed second with a time of 6:36.394, finishing behind Northeastern and ahead of Drexel. The Second Varsity Eight also secured a silver-medal finish, crossing in 6:42.238 to finish second overall behind Northeastern. UConn continued its strong day in the Varsity Four, making a late push to place second with a time of 7:23.305 in one of the closest races of the morning. The Huskies also posted a runner-up finish in the Third Varsity Eight, which did not count toward team scoring, recording a time of 6:58.873.
UConn finished the championship with 36 team points, trailing only Northeastern's 42-point total and marking the highest finish in program history at the CAA Championship.
"Today was a turning point for the future of UConn Rowing," said Sanford. "I couldn't be more proud of the performances from every boat. Everything aligned because we believed in each other. A second-place finish for all shows UConn is ready to launch. With this being my last race coaching, I'm so excited for the future and couldn't have written a better final chapter myself. I am grateful for the love and support of this team and everyone who has supported us. Huskies Forever!"
