Tight end Aaron McLean has had to make more adjustments than most players entering their senior season with a program. The Southborough, Mass. native opted to make the move from wide receiver to tight end this spring. The transition brought on an initial sense of unease and apprehension but the veteran was able to pick up the position quickly.
"During spring ball I went up to the coach's office and asked him if I could switch," said the St. Mark's School product. "I saw the new offense we were running and I felt like I could bring more depth to the position."
Redshirt junior tight end Tyler Davis and tight end coach Corey Edsall are two of the more significant role models McLean has right now.
"Tyler (Davis) came from being a quarterback," said McLean, "But he's been playing the position longer than me so when I'm watching him, I watch his footwork and I try to learn from him because obviously I'm a little behind after playing wide receiver the last three years. I'm doing everything I can to try and learn from Tyler and coach Edsall."
Although the skill was there, McLean needed the summer to gain the weight and muscle needed to size up to his counterparts.
"I knew I would have to be going against 300 pound guys so I spent more time trying to put up bigger weights in order to get there," said McLean.
"I've been impressed," UConn coach Randy Edsall said of McLean's move. "He's picked it up really well. He's doing a good job of blocking, too."
With each day that passes this football season, McLean feels he is getting a better grasp on the position. However, as comfortable as he has gotten, watching film each week is what helps give him a better idea of what still needs to be worked on. McLean, along with his teammates, are putting in the work in hopes of turning this season around.
"I think guys are working harder, studying more film and coming more prepared to practice," said McLean.
According to McLean, last year's Memphis match-up is a game they can't forget. The squad is keeping that outcome in mind moving through this week's preparation. That's their push.
