NEW ORLEANS, La.—The UConn (13-15, 5-10 AAC) women's volleyball team faced Tulane (23-7, 11-4 AAC) on Sunday afternoon in their final road match of the 2018 regular season in a thrilling rematch with a final score of 3-2. The Huskies stunned the Green Wave in the third set and took the following set, to force a crucial fifth set.
How it happened…
Set 3
- Neither team could pull away from the other but UConn finally stretched the lead just enough to steal away a set from Tulane; which could've been the end of the match since the Green Wave were up a pair of sets.
- The 20-20 tie forced the Huskies into taking a timeout. The Green Wave tacked on two more points via a kill and UConn attack error, forcing another timeout.
- Freshman Caylee Parker sent a volley striking to the Tulane side, set up by senior Emma Turner.
- Freshman Kennadie Jake-Turner got in on the action with a kill of her own from Turner.
- After Tulane subs, Jake-Turner pushed the tempo and was followed by a crucial kill from Turner; which caused the Green Wave to take a timeout.
- Iman McGary walled off the set as the Huskies took their first victory in the match at 25-23.
Set 4
- UConn fell behind early in this set but rallied back to tie the set up at five all, via Jake-Turner. The final tie of the set was a few points later at 6-6.
- The Huskies went on a run through this set pushing the pace with an onslaught of points coming from five different student-athletes; Jake-Turner, Turner, Parker, McGary, and senior Danielle Cabel.
- Parker's final two kills were UConn's last pair of points to win the set at 25-17.
The Fifth Set saw the Huskies get out on a roll not allowing the Green Wave to score their first point until they had five of their own. Sophomore Ally Barrett opened the final set with the first points for either team. UConn's defense contributed to those five opening points, forcing Tulane into miscues and several attack errors. The last tie of the match occurred at the seventh point, as McGary picked up the kill for the Huskies.
UConn ended the match with a total of 85 digs, seven blocks, three aces, 57 kills, and 54 assists. Kills leaders for the Huskies were Parker (18), Jake-Turner (12), McGary (12). Parker posted a pair of service aces in addition to Courtney Morris. Jake-Turner led the way with four blocks while Barrett and freshman Anna Petrova added four more collectively. Turner posted 37 assists in addition to Barrett and senior Elizabeth Kline who had five respectively. In other defensive news, four different Huskies ended the match with double-digit digs in Turner (16), Barrett (10), Parker (14), and Kline (24).
The 2018 season is coming to a close but not before UConn returns to Gampel Pavilion for their final three matches against Tulsa, Wichita State, and Temple. Friday, Nov. 16th serves as senior night with the match beginning at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18th will be 'Elsa Nocton Day', as the team honors their special teammate one last time while Elsa's fellow chorus members from MMS will sing the national anthem.
